Unlike humans, plants are immobile, they do not have brain or antibodies and, therefore, they cannot escape from stressful situations. Nevertheless, they survived in harsh conditions and some trees even lived for thousands of years, for example the Bristlecone pine has lived for 5000 years. By using specialized organs and cells in meristems, plants maintain their growth for so long. Furthermore, increasing global warming has serious impacts on plant agriculture, but the primary mechanisms of temperature perception are not well understood. The purpose of my research is to understand how plant meristems sense temperature signals and how these signals are integrated into plant growth and development. The long-term goal of my research is to provide breeding solutions to produce environmentally friendly crops.
