This project aims to understand how tomato plants become resilient to heat stress.
We will identify and investigate the major responses of tomatoes to realistic climatechange conditions. These phenotypes will enable us to develop molecular and physiological assays for screening diverse tomato genotypes to identify major loci contributing to heat stress resilience. These candidates may then be tested using genome-editing for their ability to improve resilience. This project brings together world-class expertise in the areas of temperature perception networks, plant phenotyping and network analysis and tomato secondary metabolism and trichome responses. This ambitious programme therefore has the opportunity to make a step-change advance in this area, as it brings together key areas of expertise which are critical for addressing this challenge.
