The collaborative project CityFood aims to address a range of scientific, environmental, and social questions regarding supply chain optimization, resource use efficiency, food safety and regulatory acceptance of integrated aqua-agriculture as a sustainable form of food production to meet a growing population.

In this, the project fits in the line of IGZ working with closed production cycles and co-cultivation systems. In the the CityFood collaboration, the potential of integrated aqua-agriculture systems (aquaponics) for urban applications is explored. In close cooperation with IGB and Wageningen University, the IGZ contributes to WP2 Urban planning and FWE Nexus Interactions and WP3 Modelling and optimization with systems analysis and modelling. The extended aquaponics-simulator by Goddek & Körner (2019) and HORTSYS expertise in Consequential Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) will be applied; i.e. LCA and deterministic modelling approach will be combined in a novel approach. The environmental impact of aquaponics production systems compared to regular produced vegetable and fish will be analysed. As example and boundary the greater city of Berlin is used. All input and output of the respective consumed vegetables and fish will be investigated and various case studies will be done for aquaponics sites in Berlin. Eventually, a decision matrix of location specific variables (e.g. aquaponics connected to a brewery, aquaponics on a supermarket roof) will be created.
