Model farms
Establishment of two model farms: Two sites were
selected in Blang Krueng, Baitussalam and in Miruék Taman,
Darussalam, close to the Syiah Kuala University. Plant and soil
sampling for analysis are taken continuously.

Model farm in Blang Krueng
Farm 1 - Farmer Mr. Hasballa
These pictures were taken during the first workshop March 2006. They
show typical crops, like coconut, banana, peanut, and corn grown by the
farmers of this region. To estimate the impact of the tsunami on the
soil and to evaluate the nutrient level of the soil, soil samples
are taken.

After the workshop the University of Aceh together with the farmers
started the establishment of the first fields. These pictures were
taken until August 2006. In close discussion with the scientists, the
farmers start tilling their fields.

Farm 2 - Farmer Mr. Tarmizi
In September 2007 a second modelfarm in Blang Krueng was chosen
for further experiments. The farmer is growing mainly swamp cabbage,
maize, and peanut that sells well on the market. Swamp cabbage is
harvested about three times a week. Tomato, eggplant, and chilli are
cultivated for private consumption only. The problem of his farm
is that is is flooded often during the rainy season due to
its location.

Model farm Miruék Taman
Similarly to the farm in Blang Krueng the wave rushed over the land
taking boats and seeds of plants with them. Usually the shiny
leaved, dark green plants (halophytes) grow on saline soils close to
the sea, but now they also grow inland. Similar to
Blang
Krueng soil samples were taken for first investiagtions.

Since March 2006 farmers started to till
fallow land and fertilize with organic
matter.

The tillaging with a tractor is much more easier than by hand.

Afterwards the organic fertilizer was added.

In
January 2007 the experimental plots were rearranged. Each plot was cut
into halves. One side was not fertilized at all (control), the other
side was treated as before. Until September 2007 corn and swamp cabbage
have been harvested and 6 others planted.
